IMERETI  - LOCATION OF THE GOLDEN FLEECE


In late antiquity and early Middle Ages the ancient western Georgian kingdom of Egrisi existed on the territory of Imereti. Its king declared Christianity as an official religion of Egrisi in 523 AD. In 975-1466 Imereti was part of the united Georgian Kingdom. Since its disintegration in the 15th century, Imereti was an independent kingdom

KUTAISI

 

The biggest city of region. It is the centre of Imereti.  Kutaisi was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Colchis. Archeological evidence indicates that the city functioned as the capital of the kingdom of Colchis as early as the second millennium BC. Several historians believe that, in Argonautica, a Greek epic poem about Jason and the Argonauts and their journey to Colchis, author Apollonius Rhodius considered Kutaisi their final destination as well as the residence of King Aeëtes.

GELATI MONASTERY COMPLEX


Gelati is a monastic complex near Kutaisi,. It contains the Church of the Virgin founded by the King of Georgia David the Builder in 1106, and the 13th-century churches of St George and St Nicholas. The Gelati Monastery for a long time was one of the main cultural and intellectual centers in Georgia.

IMERETI CAVES PROTECTED AREAS

 

The Imereti Caves Protected Areas consist of different caves, each of which is known for its interesting characteristics. This large area is ecologically quite complex and is home to a number of geological, paleontological, speleological and botanical treasures. The protected area was created in 2007 on the base of the Sataplia State Nature Reserve, and aims to maintain and restore the region’s natural and cultural treasures and preserve its archeological sites and unique natural monuments. Officials also hope it will support the development of recreation and tourism in this naturally and culturally rich area.

VANIS NAKALAKEVI


Vani Nakalakevi is located in the Vani district and it dates back to the 8th century B.C. Vani used to be the cultural and business center of ancient kingdom of Colkheti. One of the most important old Colkhi  cities was situated on its place, which achieved its revival  in 2-1 cc. B.C. it became one of the most significant cities of ancient age.

TSKALTUBO

 

Tskaltubo is well-known balneological resort on  the 120 m above the sea-level. The spa resort was created there only  in the 20ies of the 22th c. It is famous for its radon-carbonate mineral springs, whose natural temperature of 33-35°C enables the water to be used without preliminary heating.

KATSKHIS SVETI

 

Ktskchis sveti is located near the town of Chiatura. There are two churches constructed on the plateau of the 40 meter high cliff, which one can reach only by climbing a hanging set of stairs. This location is not characteristic for churches in Georgia and researchers generally believe they were the home of lonely monks, who came from the Middle East.

GORDI


Gordi -  is situated at the border of three regions: Samegrelo,Imereti,and Lechkhumi.It is unknown why the village was called so but it may have connection with St.Gordi from Cappadocia, who was tortured and killed 320 A.D. Gordi is famous for the summer  residence of the nobles called the Dadianis  and for its forest park.

SHROSHA

 

Shrosha is the ancient home of pottery in Georgia, known since ancient times for its masterpieces. Red soil, useless for agriculture, is perfect for making pottery. There was a factory built in Shrosha at the beginning of the 20th century to produce ceramic items, but traditional methods, passed on by ancestors, are still popular. Kvevri (wine jars made of clay) are usually stored in the ground to keep wine cool during summer and therefore increase its lifespan.
